Does purchasing Banner Ads and sending the traffic directly to our site help with SEO value?

This is a great question.

Is the URL from the banner campaign a direct link? Direct links are really where you get your SEO value.  You can tell if it’s a direct link because when you hover over the banner it will show on the bottom left corner of your browser YOURURLNAME.com.

If you need to track the performance of the URL for affiliates or conversion measures – typically the URL will not be your own and is actually a redirect which you lose SEO value for.

Things to keep in mind for SEO value:

Links should always be pointing to indexed pages which are linked well to other pages within the site, and the other pages linked back.  This typically is a home page or 2 tier pages on the site.

Links should not be a javascript redirect and should not use flash.

The banner/link should be on a page that is indexed by Google and has some Google rankings, Page rank, and overall a well sought after site for information or products.

The link should not have a “no follow” on it pointing to your site.

Avoid links on websites that go crazy on trying to advertise the banner space and selling of links.

Finally, remember that banners inherently receive less power for SEO because Google assumes they are paid links.  By following the above thoughts you can get a banner that brings you the most optimized results.
