Greed – Black Hat SEO Services
April 2, 2013
The topic of Black Hat SEO services is probably the one I am most passionate to speak out about and was the original inspiration behind the whole series. If there is one “sin” that I could warn everyone who is just looking into SEO services, it would be not to be tempted by the dark side with their false promises and deceitful claims.
I have said before that there are no guarantees when it comes to SEO services. And even that is true and false at the same time. While there are no guarantees in honest SEO, there is one absolute that everyone should know.
Any SEO service or sales pitch that guarantees you a rank or page position is lying.
That’s right. I said it. No exceptions, no addendums… nothing but the truth. If any company or person promises you page one rankings, you can be confident that they are willfully misleading you. And I am not the only person who says this. I am in the very distinguished company of Google (we’re tight like that) and Matt Cutts (Head of Google’s Webspam Team) who has said in no uncertain terms that no SEO service can guarantee a number one ranking on Google.
The reasons for this are very complex. But probably the most obvious reason is that no one knows exactly what Google’s algorithm for producing search engine results is (although we do understand it). Without knowing what it is that allows Google to decide what should go on page one, how could any SEO service guarantee they can get you on the front page?
Do I really have to say it again? They can’t.
So, what is behind these lies then? Well, to put it bluntly, these SEO services cheat. They use dirty tricks, often at the expense of the user experience, in order to unnaturally boost rankings. At this point, I am imaging at least a few people asking what’s wrong with that. There are two major answers to that question.
1) Anything done at the expense of the user experience is an exercise in futility. What is the point in getting to the front page of Google if the visitors to your site immediately bounce off it again, put off by the junk? Of course, the beautifully karmic result of this is that if black hat SEO services are able to get you to the front page by using these kinds of tactics, you won’t be there for long because a high bounce rate is one of the common contributing factors to losing rankings.
2) Participating in Black Hat SEO services can get your site penalized by Google, including being blacklisted. In other words, all that work you are doing to get yourself to the front page of Google can actually get you removed from Google entirely. Irony is fun.
I understand why black hat SEO services are so tempting, but there is so much more to successful SEO than the front page of Google. Join me next week as I discuss this in my blog post about envy.
