NoFollow and SEO: The Truth

October 22, 2010

This was sent to a customer of mine and figured I would share:

Just to clear everything up – doing a “nofollow” will not hurt your rankings and it will save a bit of juice for your site not to carry over PR to the site in question who wants you to link.  Nofollows have not proven to be harmful unless you put “nofollows” on all your links for 1 page only, which in that case you should just use a robot.txt file at the root folder. I believe this is just a rumor that I haven’t experinced issues with – and I conduct SEO on about 130 different sites now.

To back up my claim I have attached an article from Matt Cutts from Google, posted in 2009 which he talks about page scuplting and possible link power decay based from Nofollows. Link to article: http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/pagerank-sculpting/
